Expert Witnesses and Scientific Evidence
Expert Types
Nursing experts address assessment, monitoring, documentation, care planning, medication administration, and escalation. They testify to nursing standards rather than to medical diagnosis or physician conduct.
Many states require the expert practice in the same field.
Alternative Names:
Nursing Expert, Nurse Expert Witness
Why it Matters?
The scope boundary between nursing and medical opinion is enforced, and a nurse opining that a physician's diagnosis was wrong or that different treatment would have changed the outcome exceeds the discipline. Causation testimony is the recurring issue, since many jurisdictions hold nurses cannot testify to medical causation even where they can testify to standard of care. That limitation can defeat a claim resting entirely on nursing testimony.
