Jury Selection
Voir dire is the examination of the venire by the court, counsel, or both. Questions probe experiences, attitudes, and relationships that could affect impartiality, and answers supply the basis for challenges.
Some courts supplement oral questioning with written juror questionnaires, particularly in lengthy or high-profile trials.

Why it Matters?
Voir dire serves a second function beyond selection, which is introducing the defense themes before the plaintiff's opening. Questions about personal responsibility, the difference between an accident and negligence, and whether a serious injury necessarily means someone was at fault begin conditioning the panel. The constraint is that questions cannot argue the case, and courts differ sharply in how much latitude they allow.
