Why it Matters?
Multifactorial etiology makes individual attribution genuinely uncertain, which is the honest scientific position and a useful defense framing. Where a condition results from interacting genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors, attributing it to one exposure requires more than establishing that the exposure could contribute. Confounding analysis in the underlying epidemiology is the technical version of the same point, since studies must control for the other factors to isolate the exposure's effect.
