Why it Matters?
Logs become important when completeness is challenged, because reconstructing what was produced across a dozen rolling productions from cover letters alone is slow and error-prone. They also support the mechanical checks that catch problems early: gaps in Bates ranges, volumes inconsistent with what was reviewed, and custodians never appearing in any production despite being on the hold list.
